Furuichi Koi was a Japanese civil engineer, born in 1854 and died in 1934, recognized as the first person to receive a Doctor of Engineering degree in Japan. He served as the first president of Koka Daigaku, the engineering college that later became part of the University of Tokyo, and as the first chairman of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, helping establish engineering as an organized profession in Japan. His most significant infrastructure achievement was founding the Tokyo Underground Railway, which opened in 1920 as the first underground railway line in Asia.
