Karl von Terzaghi was an Austrian civil engineer regarded as the father of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. His 1925 book, published in German as Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage, established rigorous mathematical methods for analyzing how soil behaves under load and pressure, including the effect of water within soil on its strength, laying the scientific foundation that modern geotechnical practice still rests on. Over his career he held academic posts at Istanbul Technical University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Vienna University of Technology and Harvard University, while consulting on major infrastructure projects including dams, subway systems and shipyard construction. He received the Norman Medal of the American Society of Civil Engineers four times and the Franklin Institute's Frank P. Brown Medal in 1946, and after his death in 1963 the society established the Karl Terzaghi Award and the Karl Terzaghi Lecture in his honor; a dam in British Columbia was also named for him.
