William Froude

Marine Engineering

William Froude was an English engineer who founded the modern practice of ship hull design through scaled hydrodynamic testing. He developed the mathematical relationship now called the Froude number, which allows the wave-making resistance measured on a small scaled model in a towing tank to be reliably translated into the resistance a full-size ship hull will experience, and he built the first ship-model towing tank at Torquay in the 1870s to put the method into practice for the Royal Navy. His techniques for predicting hull resistance and rolling behavior from model tests became standard practice in naval architecture and marine engineering worldwide. FAQs

Why did William Froude test ship hulls as small scale models?

Scale model tests with the Froude number let small hull results predict full size ships.

Froude was given a commission to identify the most efficient hull shape, and he met it by using scale models. He established a formula, now known as the Froude number, by which the results of small scale tests could be applied to full size ships. His experiments were vindicated in full scale trials conducted by the Admiralty, and as a result the first ship test tank was built at public expense beside his home at Chelston Cross, Torquay.
