Marine engineering is the engineering of watercraft, ocean systems and ocean structures, applying mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer engineering to the design, development, operation and maintenance of propulsion plants, machinery, piping, and automation and control systems for vessels of any kind, as well as coastal and offshore structures. Archimedes is traditionally credited as its first practitioner in antiquity, and Robert Fulton's 1807 demonstration of a steam-powered vessel is traditionally regarded as the start of the modern profession.
