Henry Clifton Sorby

Materials Engineering

Henry Clifton Sorby was an English scientist and engineer regarded as the founder of metallography, the microscopic study of metal structure. Adapting techniques he had developed for examining rock thin-sections under polarized light, he showed in the 1860s that etched and polished metal samples reveal distinct crystalline structures under a microscope, and that these structures correlate with a metal's mechanical properties such as strength and hardness. His methods became fundamental to understanding and controlling steel quality, and modern metallurgical and materials engineering still rests on the microstructural analysis he pioneered. FAQs

What did Henry Clifton Sorby show about steel under the microscope?

Sorby showed six steel samples under the microscope and had found three separate crystalline compounds in steel.

Sorby prepared six different samples of steel to display under the microscope at a soirée of the British Association meeting at Newcastle. By that time he had already identified three separate crystalline compounds in steel that differed in their reaction to nitric acid. He reasoned that iron and steel are not analogous to simple minerals but to complex rocks, which is why he treated them with the microscope methods he had used on rock.

His major contribution was the development of techniques for thin sectioning of rocks and minerals with polarized light under a microscope which was also extended to study iron and steel, his family having been involved in the Sheffield iron and steel industry for generations.
