Henry Clifton Sorby

Henry Clifton Sorby was an English scientist and engineer regarded as the founder of metallography, the microscopic study of metal structure. Adapting techniques he had developed for examining rock thin-sections under polarized light, he showed in the 1860s that etched and polished metal samples reveal distinct crystalline structures under a microscope, and that these structures correlate with a metal's mechanical properties such as strength and hardness. His methods became fundamental to understanding and controlling steel quality, and modern metallurgical and materials engineering still rests on the microstructural analysis he pioneered.
