Synchronous grid of Northern Europe

Electrical Engineering

The synchronous grid of Northern Europe, also called the Nordic System, is an electrical transmission grid composed of the interconnected networks of Norway, Sweden, Finland and eastern Denmark, joined into one synchronous zone since 2009. It was managed by the coordinating body Nordel from 1963 until its integration into the pan European body ENTSO-E in 2009, and it is not itself synchronized with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area, connecting to it and other grids instead through several non synchronous direct current links.

FAQs

How does the Nordic grid trade power with neighbouring countries if it is not synchronized with them?

It trades power over direct current links such as NordLink and NorNed.

It uses direct current links instead of a shared alternating current rhythm. The Nordic grid is not synchronized with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area, but it has several non-synchronous DC connections to that area and to other synchronous grids. Listed links include NordLink from Norway to Germany, NorNed from Norway to the Netherlands, North Sea Link from Norway to the United Kingdom, Estlink from Finland to Estonia, and Baltic Cable from Sweden to Germany.
