The Central American Electrical Interconnection System, known by its Spanish acronym SIEPAC, links the power grids of six Central American nations: Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. First discussed in 1987, its new transmission lines were completed in 2014 and serve 37 million consumers, though the project has drawn controversy over its indirect environmental effects.
