Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, known as FRIB, is a scientific user facility for nuclear physics research located at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. It is funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science together with Michigan State University and the state of Michigan, and is operated by the university as a national user facility for the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB is built around a superconducting linear accelerator capable of accelerating nuclei of elements across the periodic table, up to uranium, to more than half the speed of light, so that scientists can study the properties of rare isotopes. The facility was completed and inaugurated in 2022 at a total project cost of about 765 million dollars, with Michigan State University contributing a further 212 million dollars including the land.
