HERA was a particle accelerator at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg that operated from 1992 until 30 June 2007, colliding electrons or positrons with protons at a center of mass energy of 320 giga electron volts. It remains the only lepton proton collider built to date, and its work on the structure of protons and the properties of quarks laid groundwork later built upon by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
