The London Underground is a rapid transit railway system serving Greater London and parts of the surrounding counties in England. It began operation on 10 January 1863, making it the world's first underground passenger railway. The network comprises eleven lines and 272 served stations across roughly 402 kilometres of track. In the 2024-25 year the system carried about 1.216 billion passenger journeys, with its stations together handling as many as five million journeys on a single day.
