The Positron-Electron Tandem Ring Accelerator, known as PETRA, is a particle accelerator at the German national laboratory DESY in Hamburg. At the time of its construction it was the largest storage ring of its kind, and it remains DESY's second largest synchrotron after HERA. Built originally for elementary particle physics, it was used from 1978 to 1986 to study electron positron collisions through four experiments, JADE, MARK-J, PLUTO and TASSO, and the TASSO collaboration's 1979 discovery of the gluon, the carrier particle of the strong nuclear force, is counted among its biggest successes. PETRA could accelerate electrons and positrons to 19 GeV.
