The Swiss Light Source is a synchrotron at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland that produces electromagnetic radiation of high brightness for research in materials science, biology and chemistry. Planning began in 1991, the project was approved in 1997, the storage ring produced its first light on December 15, 2000, and its experimental program started in June 2001.
