Abel Wolman

Environmental Engineering

Abel Wolman was an American sanitary and environmental engineer known as a founder of modern water treatment practice. With chemist Linn Enslow, he developed in the 1920s a practical method for calculating safe chlorine dosages for drinking water, standardizing water chlorination and enabling municipalities across the United States to dramatically reduce waterborne diseases such as typhoid. He taught at Johns Hopkins University for decades, advised the World Health Organization and United Nations on water and sanitation policy worldwide, and the American Water Works Association's Abel Wolman Award honors his influence on the field. FAQs

Why is Abel Wolman credited with standardizing water chlorination?

Wolman and the chemist Linn Enslow standardized how a municipal water supply is chlorinated.

Working with the chemist Linn Enslow, Wolman standardized the methods used to chlorinate a municipal drinking-water supply. His technical work and his arguments for the benefits of chlorination encouraged many municipalities to begin chlorinating their water supplies.
