Environmental engineering applies engineering principles to protect human health and the natural environment, designing the systems that supply clean drinking water, treat sewage and industrial waste, and control air and soil pollution. It grew out of nineteenth century sanitary engineering, the public health response to cholera and typhoid outbreaks traced to contaminated water supplies in industrializing cities. The field broadened through the twentieth century from sanitation alone to the full range of pollution control, hazardous waste management and environmental regulation that followed the rise of the modern environmental movement.
Facts
Core ConcernProtecting human health and the natural environment through the engineering of clean water, waste treatment, air quality and pollution control systems. 1 Core PrincipleProtect public health and natural systems by controlling what a human activity releases into water, air and soil before that release can cause harm, rather than remediating the harm afterward. 1 Disputed
Origin Year1955
1955 marks the founding of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the field's first dedicated professional certifying body; its practice descends directly from nineteenth century sanitary engineering, whose own origin is harder to date to a single year. Cross-Tradition Connections
Associated With
Environmental engineering grew out of nineteenth century civil and sanitary engineering practice.
