Charles Chamberland

Biomedical Engineering

Charles Edouard Chamberland was a French microbiologist from Chilly-le-Vignoble, born in 1851, who worked with Louis Pasteur. He joined Pasteur's laboratory at the Ecole normale superieure in 1875, made the anthrax vaccine with Emile Roux and was put in charge of mass producing it. In 1884 he developed the Chamberland filter, a device using an unglazed porcelain bar whose pores were smaller than bacteria, so that a solution passed through it was freed of bacteria. He was also credited with starting the research project that led to the invention of the autoclave in 1879. He died in 1908.
