Herbert Hoover

Mining Engineering

Herbert Hoover was an American mining engineer who built an international career managing mines across Australia, China and elsewhere before entering public service and eventually the U.S. presidency. Trained at Stanford in geology, he became a globally sought-after mining consultant and executive known for modernizing mine operations and evaluating ore deposits on several continents, and with his wife Lou Henry Hoover he translated Georgius Agricola's sixteenth-century mining treatise 'De Re Metallica' from Latin into English, publishing the standard English edition still used by historians of engineering. His engineering career funded and preceded his later work in humanitarian relief and government. FAQs

Did Herbert Hoover translate De Re Metallica, and who else worked on it?

Yes, with his wife Lou Henry Hoover; they worked on it from 1907 until 1912.

Yes. Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer, translated Georgius Agricola's mining treatise De Re Metallica into English together with his wife, Lou Henry Hoover. Both had majored in geology at Stanford University. Lou Henry Hoover first looked for an adequate English translation in 1905, and the couple then worked on the project in every spare hour from 1907 until 1912. Their edition included extensive introductory material, footnotes and appendices.
