Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover was an American mining engineer who built an international career managing mines across Australia, China and elsewhere before entering public service and eventually the U.S. presidency. Trained at Stanford in geology, he became a globally sought-after mining consultant and executive known for modernizing mine operations and evaluating ore deposits on several continents, and with his wife Lou Henry Hoover he translated Georgius Agricola's sixteenth-century mining treatise 'De Re Metallica' from Latin into English, publishing the standard English edition still used by historians of engineering. His engineering career funded and preceded his later work in humanitarian relief and government.
