Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian inventor who developed a practical system of wireless telegraphy, patenting his first apparatus in Britain in 1896 and achieving the first transatlantic radio transmission on December 12, 1901, between Cornwall and Newfoundland. He shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to wireless telegraphy, though his own key tuning patent was later invalidated by the United States Supreme Court in 1943 as anticipated by earlier work, including Nikola Tesla's.

In Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co. of America v. United States, 320 U.S. 1, decided June 21, 1943, the Supreme Court held the key tuning claims of Guglielmo Marconi's own United States patent invalid, finding them anticipated by earlier patents, chiefly John Stone Stone's, and, to a lesser extent, Oliver Lodge's and Nikola Tesla's 1900 tuned circuit patent. The ruling narrows rather than reverses Marconi's popular credit: it invalidated one specific patent's claims over a tuning method, decided against the United States government in a compensation dispute, not a general finding that Marconi did not invent radio telegraphy.
