Harold Chestnut was an American engineer who helped define and promote the discipline of systems engineering. A longtime engineer at General Electric working on servomechanisms and control systems, he co-authored one of the field's foundational textbooks, 'Servomechanisms and Regulating System Design,' and became the first president of the International Federation of Automatic Control in 1957, helping to coordinate systems and control engineering research internationally. He was active for decades in professional engineering societies working to formalize systems engineering as a distinct methodology for designing and managing complex technical systems.
