James Clark Bunten (1838 to 1901) was a Glasgow engineer and railway director, the son of a Glasgow merchant. He served an apprenticeship at the Anderston Foundry in Glasgow and ultimately became its manager, visiting many foreign countries to arrange the erection of the machinery the firm made. Under his management the Anderston works were greatly extended and a large foundry and machine shops were established at Middlesbrough. He became a partner in the firm and was regarded as a high authority on the permanent way of railways, a subject in which the company was heavily involved. He was appointed a director of the Caledonian Railway Company in 1881 and became its chairman in 1897, and he was also an extraordinary director of the Bank of Scotland. He died at Richmond, Surrey, on 9 July 1901, aged 63.
