K. Eric Drexler

K. Eric Drexler is an American engineer who popularized the concept of molecular nanotechnology, the design and construction of machines at the scale of individual atoms and molecules. His 1986 book 'Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology' introduced a broad audience to the idea of molecular assemblers capable of building complex structures atom by atom, and his doctoral research at MIT, published as 'Nanosystems' in 1992, laid out detailed engineering analyses of proposed molecular machine components. His ideas prompted extensive scientific debate, notably a public 2003 exchange with chemist Richard Smalley over the physical feasibility of molecular assemblers, and helped establish nanotechnology as a distinct engineering research field.
