Leonard H. Wheeler of Beloit, Wisconsin was an inventor who patented an improved windmill in 1867. His patent describes a vane meant to control the motion of a common windmill better, preventing irregular motion and breakage in high winds. A light but sturdy frame supports the double attachment of the vane's tail, which swings so that the tail is thrown more or less into or out of the wind, and weights and pulleys work together with it.
