Robert Noyce was an American physicist and co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and later Intel who, independently of Jack Kilby, developed a practical silicon-based integrated circuit in 1959 that proved far easier to manufacture than Kilby's germanium device and became the industry standard. He died in 1990, ten years before the Nobel Prize recognized the invention.
