Simon Ramo was an American engineer and physicist who helped establish systems engineering as a formal discipline. Co-founder of Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation, later part of TRW, he directed the technical management of the U.S. Air Force's intercontinental ballistic missile program in the 1950s, developing methods for coordinating thousands of engineers and contractors across an enormously complex project, methods that became foundational to modern large-scale systems engineering practice. He authored influential texts on the discipline and later served on numerous government science advisory panels; the initial 'R' in TRW stands for his surname.
