Thomas Savery was an English military engineer and inventor who patented the first commercially marketed steam-powered water pump in 1698, sold as a device for draining mines, supplying towns and powering mills. His broad patent, extended by a 1699 Act of Parliament, legally required Thomas Newcomen to partner with him to bring the more practical atmospheric engine to market in 1712.
