William Fothergill Cooke was an English inventor and entrepreneur who, with Charles Wheatstone, co-invented the Cooke-Wheatstone electrical telegraph, patented in May 1837. Cooke supplied the commercial and administrative drive behind the partnership while Wheatstone supplied the science, a division that eventually produced a bitter priority dispute between the two men, settled by arbitration.
