Computing and Software Systems Engineering gathers the two branches of technology engineering most directly rooted in computer science, distinguishing them from the physical, power oriented, and multidisciplinary automation branches of electrical engineering such as robotics and mechatronics. Software engineering is a branch of both computer science and engineering focused on designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications, applying engineering principles and computer programming expertise so that a software engineer can define, implement, test, manage, and maintain software systems that meet user needs. Computer engineering is a branch of engineering specialized in developing computer hardware and software, integrating fields of electrical engineering, electronics engineering, and computer science; it is referred to at some universities as Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science and Engineering, and computer engineers require training in hardware software integration, software design, and software engineering itself. Computer science, the study of computation, information, and automation spanning theoretical disciplines such as algorithms and information theory to applied disciplines such as hardware and software design, is the shared academic foundation both engineering branches draw their methods from.
