Materials testing instruments in this group are devices designed to measure the mechanical properties of engineering materials, particularly resistance to deformation under applied force. The universal testing machine applies controlled tensile or compressive load to a specimen to measure strength characteristics such as yield point and ultimate tensile strength. The Brinell hardness test measures indentation hardness by pressing a hardened steel or carbide ball into a material's surface under a known load and measuring the diameter of the resulting indentation. The Vickers hardness test, developed in 1921 by Robert L. Smith and George E. Sandland at Vickers Ltd as an alternative to the Brinell method, presses a diamond pyramid indenter into the material and measures the indentation's diagonal length. All three instruments quantify a material's resistance to localized plastic deformation, the defining engineering property of hardness, and remain standard laboratory and quality-control equipment in materials and mechanical engineering.

In materials science, hardness (antonym: softness) is a measure of the resistance to localized plastic deformation, such as an indentation (over an area) or a scratch (linear), induced mechanically either by pressing or abrasion.
