Water purification is the process of removing undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from water so that it becomes fit for a specific purpose, most often human consumption. It relies on physical processes such as filtration, sedimentation and distillation, biological processes such as slow sand filters, chemical processes such as flocculation and chlorination, and electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet light, and is also carried out for medical, pharmacological, chemical and industrial purposes beyond drinking water.
