Peter Markus of Kansas City, Missouri was an inventor who patented an inflatable life preserver in 1928. His patent describes a preserver that can be worn deflated and without discomfort by a person in a rowboat, and that the wearer, even under water, can inflate within seconds by puncturing a cartridge of compressed air. He contrasted it with water wings, which he described as suited only to beginners and children and not safe in deep or rough water.
