3D scanning is the process of analyzing a real-world object or environment to collect three-dimensional data describing its shape and, in many cases, its surface appearance such as color, so the data can be used to build a digital 3D model. A 3D scanner can rely on many different underlying technologies, each with its own limitations, advantages, and costs, and optical methods in particular can struggle with dark, shiny, reflective, or transparent objects. The resulting data is used across a wide range of applications, including movie and video game production, virtual and augmented reality, robotic mapping, industrial design, prosthetics, reverse engineering, quality inspection, and the digitization of cultural artifacts.
