An Archimedes' screw is a hydraulic pump made of a helical surface turning inside a cylinder, used to lift water from a lower level up to an irrigation channel or other outlet. The device is traditionally credited to Archimedes of Syracuse, though some historians argue the mechanism was already in use in Egypt before him, with the earliest firm documentary mention dating to between 250 and 220 BC. The screw spread across the Roman world, largely disappeared from Europe after the third century AD, and returned during the Renaissance, and it is still used today for irrigation, land drainage and, increasingly, as a low head hydroelectric turbine.
