Beetling is a textile finishing process that produces a flat, lustrous surface on linen or cotton cloth by pounding it repeatedly with heavy wooden hammers, a mechanical treatment distinct from calendering because its flattening effect persists through the life of the fabric rather than fading. The fabric is first prepared with a potato-starch dressing, and the beetling hammers then rise and fall on the exposed cloth for upwards of one hundred hours, tightening the weave, increasing its absorbency, and giving it a stiff, leather-like hand well suited to items such as linen dishcloths. The Scottish businessman Hamilton Maxwell introduced beetling to Ireland in 1725, and William Clark and Sons, established at Upperlands in Northern Ireland in 1736, remains the last commercial beetling mill still operating anywhere in the world; beetled linen also saw renewed fashion interest following a 2020 Alexander McQueen collection, and beetling techniques have separate long traditions in North African and Middle Eastern textile production.
