Biofeedback is a technique that uses electronic or other instruments to give a person real time awareness of physiological functions such as brainwaves, muscle tension, skin conductance, heart rate or pain perception, with the goal of learning to influence those functions voluntarily. It formalizes a kind of self monitoring and self regulation that people do informally at varying levels of awareness, by making an otherwise hidden bodily signal visible or audible so it can be consciously adjusted, and with practice some people can maintain the learned changes without continued use of the equipment. It has shown demonstrated benefit for treating headaches and for urinary incontinence following prostate removal surgery, though evidence for other medical conditions is less established.
