A blech, from the Yiddish and German word for tin or sheet metal, is a metal sheet that observant Jews place over stovetop burners, and sometimes over the stoves knobs and dials, during Shabbat, as one of the precautions taken to avoid violating the halachic prohibition on cooking during the Sabbath.
