Brain implant

Brain implants, also called neural implants, are technological devices that connect directly to a biological subject's brain, usually placed on the brain's surface or attached to its cortex. A common purpose of modern brain implants, and the focus of much current research, is a biomedical prosthesis that circumvents brain areas that have become dysfunctional after a stroke or other head injury, including sensory substitution such as in vision. Other brain implants are used in animal experiments to record brain activity for scientific study, and some create interfaces between neural systems and computer chips as part of the wider field of brain-computer interfaces.
