A capacitor is a passive electronic component with two terminals that stores electrical energy by building up electric charge on two closely spaced surfaces kept insulated from each other. It was originally called a condenser, a name that survives in a few compound terms such as the condenser microphone, and is sometimes shortened informally to cap.
