Centrifugal Casting Machine

A centrifugal casting machine pours molten metal into a rotating mold, using the centrifugal force of the mold's spin to force the metal outward against the mold wall so it solidifies as a dense, uniform cylindrical casting, commonly a pipe or tube, with lighter impurities and trapped gas pushed inward toward the bore where they can be machined away. The English engineer A. G. Eckhardt patented an early centrifugal casting process for pipes in 1809, and the method was industrialized in its modern form by the Brazilian engineer Dominic Sensaud de Lavaud, whose 1918 patent for spin-casting cast iron pipe became the basis of the de Lavaud process widely adopted by pipe foundries in the following decades. Centrifugal casting remains the standard method for producing cast iron and steel pipe, as well as cylindrical parts such as engine cylinder liners, because the process yields a denser, more defect-free casting than pouring molten metal into a stationary mold.
