A CPAP machine delivers continuous positive airway pressure, a form of positive airway pressure ventilation in which a continuous flow of air above atmospheric pressure is applied to a person's upper respiratory tract. The physician Colin Sullivan created a CPAP machine in 1980 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney to treat adult patients with sleep apnea. CPAP is most effective for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, where the applied air pressure keeps the airway from collapsing or becoming blocked during sleep.
