Doubling Machine

A doubling machine, also called a twisting or plying machine, combines two or more single strands of spun yarn and twists them together into a single stronger, more uniform doubled or plied yarn. Doubling became a standard mechanized step in industrial yarn production during the nineteenth century, developed alongside ring spinning and other spinning machinery as textile mills sought stronger, more consistent yarn for weaving and knitting. Doubled yarns are typically stronger and more even than single yarns of the same weight, and doubling machines remain a standard piece of equipment in yarn-processing mills producing sewing thread, knitting yarn and industrial cordage.
