Draw Frame

A draw frame is a machine used in the preparation of spun yarn that combines several slivers of loose fiber, drawn from carding, and pulls them out together into a single thinner, more even sliver, straightening the fibers and reducing irregularities in thickness before the fiber is spun into yarn. Draw frames developed as part of the mechanized cotton-spinning sequence pioneered in late eighteenth-century Britain, refining the fiber preparation stage that early mechanized spinning systems relied on, and the machines were substantially improved through the nineteenth century as spinning mills scaled up. Modern draw frames typically combine several slivers at a time and use precise rollers to control the drawing process, producing consistently even yarn.
