A drum brake is a brake that presses a set of curved shoes or pads outward, by friction, against the inner surface of a rotating bowl-shaped drum attached to a wheel. It was first used on an automobile built by Maybach in 1900, and Louis Renault patented the design for cars in 1902, including a woven asbestos brake lining that dissipated heat better than the materials available before it.
