An embroidery machine is a device that mechanically stitches decorative patterns into fabric, replacing the slower work of hand embroidery. French engineer Josue Heilmann patented an early hand-operated embroidery machine in 1828 in Mulhouse, France, originally while trying to develop a mechanical device to help his daughters embroider by hand. Swiss inventor Isaak Groebli further developed the technology into the Schiffli embroidery machine in the 1860s, named for its shuttle-shaped bobbin, which allowed continuous, large-scale embroidery production and became the foundation of the Swiss and later worldwide industrial embroidery industry.
