GG1

GG1 is a streamlined electric locomotive built for the Pennsylvania Railroad, 140 of them constructed between 1934 and 1943 by General Electric and the PRR's Altoona Works, with the prototype entering revenue service on 10 February 1935 after the electrification of the Washington, D.C. to New York City line. General Electric engineered the locomotive and industrial designer Raymond Loewy, working with Donald Dohner, gave it its welded, streamlined Art Deco body with gold pinstripes. Capable of pulling trains at up to 100 miles per hour, the GG1 served the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak and New Jersey Transit over an operating career of almost fifty years before the last unit was retired in 1983, and sixteen examples survive in museums.
