A glucose meter is a medical device that measures the approximate concentration of glucose in a small blood sample, most often drawn from a fingertip prick onto a disposable test strip, and is central to home blood glucose monitoring for people managing diabetes mellitus or hypoglycemia. Leland Clark presented the oxygen electrode, later called the Clark electrode, on April 15, 1956, and in 1962, working with Ann Lyons at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, he built the first glucose enzyme electrode by combining glucose oxidase with his oxygen electrode, work that earned him recognition as the father of biosensors. Anton Clemens's Ames Reflectance Meter brought glucose measurement into American hospitals during the 1970s, and the first meters intended for home use, including the Glucometer introduced in November 1981 and Roche's Accu-Chek, reached patients around 1981 after studies in the late 1970s showed that home monitoring improved blood sugar control for people with type 1 diabetes.
