An induction furnace is an electrical furnace that heats metal by induction heating, in which alternating current passed through a water-cooled copper coil surrounding the metal creates a magnetic field that induces electrical currents, and so heat, directly within the metal itself, with capacities ranging from under a kilogram to about one hundred tons. The furnace is used to melt iron, steel, copper, aluminum and precious metals, and it is valued because it offers a cleaner, more energy-efficient and more precisely controlled melting process than most other means of melting metal. Because heat is generated inside the charge rather than applied from an external flame, the induction furnace produces less pollution and allows tighter control of alloy composition than older furnace types.
