The Jacquard machine is a device fitted to a loom that simplifies weaving textiles with complex patterns such as brocade, damask and matelasse; a loom fitted with one is called a Jacquard loom. Joseph Marie Jacquard patented the machine in 1804, building on earlier work by the Frenchmen Basile Bouchon in 1725, Jean Baptiste Falcon in 1728 and Jacques Vaucanson in 1740. It was controlled by a chain of punched cards laced together into a continuous sequence, with each card's rows of holes corresponding to one row of the woven design.
