The multifunction platform is a rural technology concept combining a diesel engine with attachable devices such as pumps, grain mills and electricity generators, developed and deployed by the United Nations Development Programme, which distributed 500 units in Mali between 1999 and 2004. It was later implemented across other West African countries as well as Tanzania and Zambia, and can also run on biofuel, particularly Jatropha oil, allowing communities with limited access to the electrical grid a degree of energy self-sufficiency. Its main documented impact has been reducing the labor-intensive workloads that rural women in these communities previously carried and creating new economic opportunities around the machines.
