Near field communication, or NFC, is a short-range wireless technology that lets two compatible devices held within a few centimeters of one another exchange small amounts of data, commonly used for contactless payment, transit tickets and pairing other devices. It was developed jointly by the companies Philips and Sony and formalized as an international standard in 2003, building on earlier radio-frequency identification technology. NFC chips are now built into most smartphones and many payment cards, powering contactless payment systems and quick data-sharing features between nearby devices.
